EXAMINE YOURSELF, THAT YOU LOSE NOT THOSE THINGS WHICH YOU HAVE WROUGHT

EXAMINE YOURSELF, THAT YOU LOSE NOT THOSE THINGS WHICH YOU HAVE WROUGHT.

( Luke 6:46 )And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

You know, Jesus said in one case, He asked a question. I'd like to ask the church tonight, this. Jesus said, “Why? Why? Why do you call me your 'Lord,' and do not the things that I commanded you to do? Why could you call me 'Lord,' and keep not my Word? Why can you call me 'Lord,' and deny the things that I have commanded you to preach and teach?” What is it? What does it? It's because that some denominational tradition stands between them and the Word. And anything that stands between you and God, is an idol, it takes the place of God. Why call you “Lord”? Lord means “ownership,” Lord owns the property. And if God owns me, if I am His, and He turned me around one day when I was on the wrong road, and called me for a purpose, what am I to do but to fulfill His desire, like He did Paul. How can I do anything else than to keep His Word? “Why do you call me 'Lord'?”

Jesus said, “Why do you call me Lord, and do not the things that I tell you to do?” We ought to study the Scripture. We ought to find out what God's program and plan is. He said, “You call me Lord.” Said, “But why do you call me Lord, when you don't do the things that I command you to do?” See? Yes.

“Lord” is ownership. The landlord owns the land. And the people today, they'll gladly accept Jesus for a Saviour. They don't want to go to hell. They'll accept Him as a Saviour. But when it comes to Lord, oh, no, see.

“Lord” is you to be his property. If He wants a floor mat, He makes you a floor mat. And you're just as happy a floor mat, as you'd be a morning star, see. You want ... we want ... we don't want to have him Lord. We want a Saviour, but we don't want Lord. Then when He comes Lord, and He speaks to you about certain things of the Word, “Well, I don't know about that now, you see. We just ... I just can't imagine me doing that.”

just listen a minute—how can we have the mind of Christ that was in Him, and then deny the things that He commissioned us to do? How can we place miracles in the past, when the very Christ Himself was God—and God in you. In the presence of God there's always miracles. He said, “You call me 'Lord.' Why call ye me 'Lord' and do not the things that I have commanded you to do, I laid out for you to do?” Don't you see where we've gotten to, where the church is drifting? And I find it a whole lot among our Pentecostals, too. We're drifting too far from that lifeline. We must come back to that, friend, come back, because we're getting big now.

They call themselves Christians. Jesus said, “How can you call me, Lord, and do not the things that I say to do?” They can't be Christians. I'm not their judge, but I'm just saying what the Word says. “How can you call me, Lord, and then do not the things that I said to do?” And the whole Word here is the revelation of Jesus Christ. “How do you call me, Lord?”

And that's how a Christian is known, by the fruit that he bears; ( Matthew 7:16,20 ) not the way he dresses, how intellectual he is, how well educated he is, what church he goes to. He's known by the life that he lives. That's what proves what's inside of him.

And when we find out that.... Many times we try to make the Christian church look good on the outside, we try to make ourselves neatly appeared on the outside. That's all right. Sometimes we try to shout and act like the next Christian, why, I don't know whether I'd say that was right or not. I don't believe it is. I believe you're trying to impersonate there. You must be just what you are on the inside. It's just a natural thing. If you try to make yourself act like something, then it becomes hypocrisy. Jesus said, “How can you call Me 'Lord' and do not the things that He asks you to do? ( Luke 6:46 ) How can you call Me 'Lord,' for Lordship is ownership.” So, if we call Him Lord, we must do the things that He told us to do.

He knew the possibilities, though, that there could be God would hear prayer. If we could only do that tonight! Jesus said, when He was here on earth, John 14:12, “He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also.” Jesus said, or the Bible said, in Hebrews 13:8, that was quoted a while ago, “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.” And we call this denominational life in us the life of Christ, and do the things that we do? “Why call ye Me 'Lord,' and keep not my commandments?” See? “Why call ye that?”

Oh, if you haven't got five members in your church, get the truth to it, a possibility. The same now, a possibility. But they of today don't seem to catch the vision like Samson did. They don't seem to get it, think, “Well, I'm pretty well settled down, and we have good churches, and we haven't got none....” See?
